What are Bungalows design plans ?

The term 'Bungalow' has several definitions. In fact, the idea of an Indian bungalow design may vary from those in Australia, or the USA, and so on. However, something that remains common in this is that a bungalow is usually a low-lying house which has one or one and a half storeys and provides great comfort and amenities to the owner.

The origin

The term bungalow was coined from the Hindi word 'bangala' and has been used for houses in the Bengal region. Initially used to term the spacious homes and lodgings created for British ambassadors and officials in India, this, later on, spread to other parts of the world with each country having their own bungalow design plan. For example, in India, even though bungalows were made for single-family occupancy and had only one storey, nowadays, larger two-storey bungalows are common.

Design characteristics

Bungalows are very useful for the homeowners not just in terms of a large living space, but also due to the several additional benefits they offer. Since they are erected on more square footage area than a traditional house or apartment, they can have multiple rooms. They can be 1,2, or even 3 bedroom bungalow house plans. The low-lying aspect of the bungalow offers easy accessibility to disabled persons, as well as the elderly.

Even the small bungalow plans offer significant privacy and security. Since most bungalows are only one or one and a half storeys tall, well-planted trees and shrubs are enough to block the views. Even though due to the larger area, bungalows are more expensive than multi-storeyed houses, they provide various advantages over the other. Small modern bungalow house plans are created for houses that are enough to accommodate up to 4 people. However, larger bungalows may be established for accommodating more people.

There are a few characteristics of bungalows that make them unique. Some of these include -

  • Bungalows usually have a low-pitched roof.
  • The entrance the bungalow usually opens directly to the living room area.
  • They quite often have a large front porch area that acts as an outdoor room.
  • They have outdoor spaces such as verandas, patios, etc that are easily accessible.
  • Most of the time, they have squared and tapered columns.
  • It usually has a balanced and well-proportioned exterior. However, they are not symmetrical from the front.

Designing process

The first and key step in creating a bungalow is developing the floor plan. More commonly known as a blueprint, these are created by architects and provides a detailed layout of the house. In cases where there is more than 1 storey, each floor has a separate layout. Every step of the construction is based on this plan. Even the best bungalow design has to have a great house plan.

Another component of the design process are the elevations. Designers and planners develop these in order to give a more realistic look at the house. Elevations show how a bungalow would look from various angles. A major component of a bungalow elevation is the bungalow front design. By using the software, 3D bungalow design is generated, after which it is converted into 2D view from the front, back, and both sides.

Yes, the outlook of the bungalow is important, but the interior is just as important. Beautiful bungalow designs are measured as a property of their exterior design, as well as the interior design. Interior designers use their skills to make the rooms aesthetically more pleasing, and functional more purposeful. Even though it sounds easy, designing the interior of the bungalow isn't that straightforward. The designers will have to work in collaboration with the architects, engineers, contractors, and others to create a perfect design. As a result, it is strongly advised to choose the best in the field for building your bungalow.
